Niermann weeks chandelier

Studio Capture Icon Studio OneClick Download Tearsheet PDF. Despite many layers of “over the top” decorative details, Joe Niermann saw promise in the framework underneath. He whittled away at the design and reduced it to the basic underlying structure.

The Swedish Crystal Chandelier expresses the essence of northern European lighting design in the eighteenth century, when crystals were used to enhance candlelight. A sparkling combination of beads and ornaments adds an elegant touch to this exuberant chandelier. Its opulence is reminiscent of mid-century French chic—something that might have come from the salon of Coco Chanel. By editing and paring away the antique excess, we were able to create an intriguingly simple and dynamic sculptural form. We celebrate the beauty of eighteenth century northern European lighting design with our Belvedere Chandelier. The quatrefoil shaped frame is draped in strands of faceted crystals that capture and reflect back light against the long dark winter days. The whitewashed original was found in an ol French convent outside Rouen. Candle picks and stumps of huge, old beeswax candles revealed that the chandelier had never been electrified. To brighten the long winter nights of 18th century Russia, artisans created chandeliers with cascades of brilliant crystals to coax as much light as possible from every flickering candle.
